HELLO, AUGUST!

A month for looking up—
and looking after.

The sky is putting on a show. Panama is building new teams for turtles and rescued wildlife. Far away, a tiger has returned to a place where tigers vanished long ago. This first monthly issue is about shadows, second chances, and the people who protect wild places.

The Sun went dark!

The Moon crossed in front of the Sun and sent a fast-moving shadow over part of Earth.

On August 12, the Moon moved between Earth and the Sun. Along a narrow path across Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and nearby places, daytime turned dark for a little while. That is called a total solar eclipse.

WORD TO KEEP

total eclipse / the moment when the Moon completely covers the bright face of the Sun

02 / MAKE + PLAY

Turn August’s news
into four tiny missions.

Each activity can begin with a pencil, a flashlight, or a good look outside.

1SHADOW

Make a mini eclipse.

With a grown-up, use a flashlight and two different-size balls indoors. Move the small ball until its shadow crosses the big one.

2SKY

Count the streaks.

From a safe dark place with a grown-up, make one tally mark for every meteor you spot. Ten quiet minutes is enough.

3BEACH

Guide the turtle.

Draw a maze from nest to sea. Add three safe clues and three obstacles that beach helpers should remove.

4HABITAT

Hide a tiger.

Design stripes that help a tiger disappear among reeds, tree shadows, and tall grass. Test them from far away.
